SOMEONE, I TELL YOU, IN ANOTHER TIME, WILL REMEMBER US -

SAPPHO

I love to travel, and don’t get me wrong, I love that photography has me traveling more than I could ever wished for. But sometimes hotels start feeling just like that, impersonal cold buildings while I make my stay at room 4227. 🏢
So ever since last year, when destination weddings became 80% of my bookings, I decided that not only for personal vacations, but also for work, I’d take my time in searching for unique artsy, historic or just somehow amazing different places to make home away from home. Even if it was just for a couple of days. 🐚
And that’s how I came across Palihouse at Santa Monica @palisociety 🎷 Frank Sinatra’s quietly tunes in (I might have died of happiness right there) as soon as you cross the door passing the almost italian -with bikes and benches included- dreamy gardens. 🌳
On your left rich velvety green armchairs lit only by ambar stained glass and right in front of you a large living room area with both vintage and modern trends, made for reading, scotch drinking, life planning and just letting yourself get lost in this 1920’s moorish inspired manor. If I was ever to write a book, I’d do it sitting there, out in the terrace with a cup of tea beneath tall trees and the cool breeze coming in from the Pacific.
I could go on and on about Palihouse, from the nostalgic creaking wooden stairs, to the old elevator, the gorgeous wallpaper, the intensity of it’s shadows and deep colors, the amazing staff that works there, but most of all how they really make you feel at home. 🎼🛎 I actually felt like as if I was inside an Old Hollywood movie, just living my days there. ✨
Check out my stories to see more about Palihouse and my upcoming hotel tours while wedding travelin’ ❤️
We drove to Pacific Beach and parked too far. But the truth is we didn’t mind walking. We never have. 🌴 Even as we carried so much stuff around, we laughed and complained as we crossed the big palm avenue just before the wooden deck. 🐚 Just an hour before sunset, and we’d somehow made it there. The three of us. With a free afternoon, our yearly California summer and way too much things to talk about. I took out my camera and went for the warm sandy light. I went for the ocean and the surfers. And the quiet waves and also the noisy ones. I went for stopping time and spending the day with my high school friends, shooting beaches and sunsets and white dresses and a dancing bride. ☀️We ended up carrying pounds of sand into the car, all soaked up and happy, and hungry till we finally got downtown. We lost out parking ticket, changed clothes inside the car and had drinks on the corner of Kettner with the rest of our friends that Friday our hair went humid, huge and wild. 🍷 So a photo is not just a photo, but an image that triggers all that, a story, a moment, a whole lot of something. Those somethings worth sharing and telling and smiling about ❤️.
He knew what he was doing, but still I held my breath. Back flipping in an LA rooftop just came natural to him, just as loving her. 🖤
And she smiled because she knew. About his acrobatic bae and about how much he rocked her world.
FYI. No future groom was harmed in the making of this pic, but me? I almost screeched with awe, for so much adrenaline from this roof jumper totally blew mi mind 💥! I might even try sky diving now! Might. Someday. One day. No. I’ll stick to watching others jump. On my couch, on the TV. Is there a jumping Netflix show?
If I could get all of my favorite things in a picture I would. But cramming my bae 🚶🏻‍♂️, my dogs 🐶 at home, all the colors in the world, a massive order of french fries🍟, a flowery garden 🌿 and laughter you could actually hear amid that beautiful chaos, would be pretty hard to do. Specially if you think we would all be trying to get those fries.
But this week I got kinda close to that, by opening up a creative window through learning something new. Something colorful, happy and beautiful. And 🌷flowery indeed.
I spent this week with amazing people who love art, who understand the quiet magic of aesthetics and the subtle balance of patience while creating. And you know what, I enjoyed every minute of it. Of unplugging, of carefully watching and learning to let go of strict forms. For flowers should run free and be placed where we feel like it. Like art should. Where technique is always learned, but practice and intuition end up leading our own way. Flowers like photography, like all creative roads.
And I have to say between learning all that, spending time with my bae, laughing with my nieces and sister, eating not fries but a pizza and sushi overload, and finding out Carmelo (pictured) was a perfect model for our just finished flower installation really made it all just perfect.
A beautiful chaos. Like the ones I like. With laughter all around. 🌾
I laughed 90% of the time during this wedding. Even during the ceremony when a few drops of rain fell down and Alex and Julia laughed the silly rain away. ☔️I laughed during portraits, and at the groom’s brothers hilarious toasts, and also when grandpa decided to stick the official wedding tattoo on his belly.
I enjoyed every single time Alex made Julia smile, and loved the special way they seemed to be connected by happiness, high energy and their contagious joie de vivre. ❤️ I spent over 8 hours sharing the wedding with them, and you know what? It never felt like work. It never does when clients live life like this, highly, fully and magically. Long live happy people like them!
🔥 City of Angels and rooftop lovers •••
🌙 For more years than I should I slept 6 hours per night, drank coffee ☕️ at midnight (which I don’t even like but needed to stay awake and get work done) and skipped meals or overate whenever I had the chance to grab a bite. 💥 For more years than I should I felt almighty and proud of my unbreakable mind and body that beared with anything I threw on it. 👊🏻 I got things made, tasks accomplished, never said no to anything and grew my things to do list to an endless enciclopedia that demanded more time, more energy and less sleep. 👣 For more years than I should I didn’t listen to my body asking me to slow down. To not overworry and overwork. And then it did. In a hault. Shaking every piece of me until that very moment.
👁 Fortunately in my case it was more of a warning, but for many others it comes as too late a sign. We somehow don’t realize that everything we do every single day affects our health, whether it’s not sleeping or excercising enough. Or not setting boundaries or failing in finding a balance for our work and personal life.
👉🏻 Nowadays I strive daily in looking for simple ways to let my body know I’m watching over. Resting when I need to, breathing consciously, sleeping +8 hrs per day, dropping of coffee and leaving time everyday to enjoy the calmness of moments. 💪🏻 Like many, I live in a whirlwind of work and energy, and while I deeply enjoy every minute of it, I try to balance it everyday. // If you relate to this, please take care, you have just one body and it’s very much breakable, so again TAKE CARE :)
Mom, let’s just take a minute
while you hold me like when I was little,
Let’s just take a minute you and I ❤️
Friday confession: 📋I organize the randomest stuff whenever I’m nervous. Drawers, closet, laundry, pantry. 🌬And I might also add that I clean like a hurricane whenever I’m anxious. 🍽 I wash dishes, water the plants, clean the fridge and will paint or fix anything to get myself automode busy. Apparently I become a top whirlwind housewife whenever something gets me jittery. And as weird as it may sound, organizing helps me unwind and focus. Activity de-paralyses my thoughts and allows me to continue in functionality.
⚾️ In my case I found out what worked best for me whenever life threw curved balls at me, and self taught myself to think about problem solving while getting tasks done. ✨ Guess each of us has a unique way of venting in what helps distract our minds, so my advice would be to simply follow your own recipe. Whether it’s excercise, cooking, binge eating, swimming, cleaning (like me) or talking it out with friends. Just remember the thing is to keep moving, and keep the hustle and the bustle close to the focus and the calm. 🕊 Peace out.
As it turns out life is unpredictable as much as it’s bittersweet.
🤸🏻‍♀️ No, I didn’t just find out, I did at age 3 as I ran across the school patio ecstatic about being chosen to perform as a yellow duck on the next spring festival (there were actually 25 other yellow ducks, but what the 🐤). As I ran up to my mom yelling the news (yes, I was a young yeller) I tripped, flew and fell face down on the harsh paved floor. My knees, elbows and hands were bleeding. And my school socks got all teared up. Everything hurt and I felt my face burning from pain, all scratched and messed up. 🚨After my pre-duck fall I was taken to the school nurse who made sure all blood was wiped off and all weird spray was sprayed on my wounds (still curious about the gooey school stuff they plastered on kids whenever they got in an accident). And then got treated to a strawberry popsicle by my aunt (then a high school senior at the same school) who snuck out of her classroom with her friends to lift up my spirits at the infirmary. 🎭 The thing is, to this day, this is one of my first memories as a kid. Going from joy to sorrow in a second, and then joy and calm again. So simple and yet so revealing. Since life has happened just like this. Bittersweet. As it is.
🍩
I stared at my almost gone sugar glazed donut and thought about this (and about grabbing a second donut). About how sometimes we get lucky and life just comes so easy and sweet, and how we should be grateful and celebrate. But also about how somedays it’s comes bitter and sad, and almost impossible to overcome without a helping hand. // 🎢 Guess we’re all here for the bittersweet ride, so as long as we are, be a helpful hand to the ones who ask you for it. Remember you too might fall and need to be picked up from the harsh floor one day. 😉
